October 2004
1 October, Estoril Challenge Open Portugal Telecom, 2nd Round
74 (+3)
Eight shots better today but still not very good. Ended up shooting 74
today but played pretty poor all the way through the 18 holes. Needed
something amazing to happen today to make the cut but after bogeys on
the 2nd and 3rd holes it was more damage limitation than anything else.
Birdied the long par 4 fifth hole but more bogeys on 8 and 9 meant I reached
the turn at 3 over-par. Three birdies, three bogeys and 3 pars followed
on the back nine to finish 3 over for the day and 14 over for the event.
Making seven bogeys is just not good enough at this level. Going to get
some practice in and enjoy the sun for next couple of days. David
7 October, Moroccan Classic, 1st Round 71 (+1)
Shot one over-par 71 today; horrific. Started with 3 solid pars and then
dropped a shot at the long par 3 4th. A par followed at the next before
I holed a perfect 3/4 6 iron for my first competitive hole in one! Birdied
the 8th to reach the turn at 2 under and then birdied the 10th to get
to 3 under. It should have been more but was happy with the way things
were going as I got to the easier stretch on the course. I then started
to play and think like an idiot. Bogeyed the 11th before another bogey
followed on the 14th, one of the easier short par fives you can play.
Bogeyed the 15th and then missed from 2 feet on 17 for birdie and then
again from 2 feet at the last for par and I was round in 1 over-par 71.
What a waste. David
8 October, Moroccan Classic, 2nd Round 67 (-3)
Three under-par 67 today which is more what I'm looking for. I did though
really struggle with my irons but fortunately I hit it straight off the
tee which is crucial around this course and finally my short game returned.
Started at the 10th today and didn't get off to the greatest off starts
with a bogey at the 11th for the second day running. Hung in there and
got back to back birdies on 16 and 17 to reach the turn at 1 under. Two
more birdies followed at the 3rd and 8th holes to finish off a good days
work. It has been hard but it is important cut to make and I have to take
advantage this weekend due to my place on the Order of Merit. Just sitting
inside the top 80, so a good week here should move me up. Off for some
practice then the gym. David
9 October, Moroccan Classic, 3rd Round 73 (+3)
Six shots worse than yesterday with a three over-par 73. Utter rubbish.
Started my round off well with 6 solid pars before a bad bogey at the
long par 4 7th. Was still positive about my game and was able to birdie
both the 8th and 9th to reach the turn at one under. Pared the 10th, before
I made bogey at the 11th for the third straight day. Another bogey followed
at the 12th before further bogeys at 15 and 16 meant I finished four over
for the last 8 holes. Just the same old rubbish that costs me. Off for
some practice and a bite to eat. David
10 October, Moroccan Classic, 4th Round 70 (Ev)
Round in level par 70 today to round off a pretty disappointing weekends
play. It was a funny day today, I played pretty well but missed a lot
of good chances but my bad shots were horrific and cost me shots every
time. Just didn't get the breaks when I needed them. Double bogeyed the
2nd but got both shots back with good birdies at the 3rd and 5th holes.
Made a poor bogey at the 9th to reach the turn at 1 over and then started
the back nine with a bogey at the 10th. Pared the 11th for the first time
this week before a birdie at the 12 got me going in the right direction.
Bogeyed the par three 13th but birdied the next two holes to get back
to level par for the day. Pared the final 3 holes to be round in level
par. Not what I was looking for this weekend and with 2 events to go I
need a couple of good finishes to secure my card for next year. David.
14 October, Computacenter English Challenge Open, 1st Round 75
(+3)
75. Played pretty good on the front nine but threw away a few easy shots.
Got off to a great start with a birdie at the long par 5 second but dropped
shots on 4 and 5 before I birdied the second par 5, the 6th. Gave that
shot straight back with a poor bogey at the par 3 7th to reach the turn
at one over. On the back nine I had my all too common head off for four
holes and dropped three shots on some of the easier holes. After a birdie
at the 11th to get back to level I bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 15th holes.
Three pars to finish with and I was round in 3 over-par 75. Today was
probably the worst I've hit my irons all season. Range beckons. David
15 October, Computacenter English Challenge Open, 2nd Round 75
(+3)
Not the best off days today and I still seem to be making far too many
stupid mistakes. I ended up shooting 75, 3 over-par again which is going
to be a few shots to many to make the cut which is very disappointing.
Started on the 10th today and got off to a bad start by making double
bogey on the par 5. Got one off the shots back with a birdie at the 12th
and also made a birdie 2 at the 17th but in-between I had bogeyed the
16th. Still, I was 4 over for the tournament with 9 holes to play and
still had a good chance of playing at the weekend. Couldn't make the birdies
I needed on the front nine and all chances of making the cut went when
I double bogeyed the par five 6th and followed that up with a bogey at
the 7th. Despite a birdie on my final hole, the 9th, it is looking like
another missed cut. David
