May 2004

1/2 May, Peugeot Challenge de León, 3rd Round, 77 (+6), 4th Round, (72(+1)
Not much to say about Saturday. The start was bad, the middle was not much better and the end was just the same. Played poorly all day and never got any breaks when I needed them. Couldn't find the middle of the club and when I needed my putting to save me a few shots I couldn't get the ball to drop. Disappointed as I had got myself into a good position and to shoot 6 over-par 77 for the day was not in the script. It has dropped me back down the leaderboard but hopefully I can pull thing together tomorrow, shoot under-par and clime back up. Sunday was not much better except from the score. I managed to scrape it round in 1 over-par 72 to finish the tournament on 4 over 288 and in a tie for 32nd place. A very disappointing weekend but I made the cut and made a cheque. Played some good stuff early on in the week so hopefully I can take that play into my next event and forget about this weekend. David

6 May, Tessali-Metaponto Open di Puglia e Basilicata, 1st Round, 69 (-3)
Had a good opening round of 69 three under-par today here in Italy. The first couple of rounds are held on two different courses with one round on each. Today I was playing the Metaponto course which is the longer of the two. The weather is sunny but very windy also. Played very solid and putted pretty good all day. I started on the 10th hole today and got off to a great start with birdies on my second, fourth and sixth holes to get to three under-par. My birdie on the 11th, my second, came by way off holing a 60 footer! Got unlucky on my 7th hole when I caught a flier and made bogey and also made bogey on the 18th when it took me three to get down from the fringe. So I reached the turn in one under-par 35. Played the front nine, my final 9 holes very well with birdies on the 2nd and on my final hole the 9th. It's always good to birdie your final hole off the day. I drove the ball much better today and was aiming it in the right direction and hitting the ball in right place most of day. Good start and hopefully I can keep it going tomorrow. David

7 May, Tessali-Metaponto Open di Puglia e Basilicata, 2nd Round, 72 (+1)
Played the par 71 Tessali course today and shot one over-par 72. I played pretty good all day except for one hole. I had a nightmare on the sixth when I made a very bad triple bogey. Hit it OB with my tee shot, which was a dumb play, then with my second ball I missed a short putt for double bogey, giving me a 7 on the par 4. That put me behind the 8 ball and under undue pressure but I played a really solid back nine, with birdies on 10, 14 and 16. I hit a lot of good putts from around 15 feet today that did everything but go in. Happy with the way I came back but mentally it was such a poor triple. I'm sitting on 2 under-par 141 so I should be OK for the weekend. Off to get something to eat and then hit some balls. David

8 May, Tessali-Metaponto Open di Puglia e Basilicata, 3rd Round, 69 (-2)
Shot 69, two under-par today. Played really solid but got nothing much out of it. Didn't get off to the greatest of starts with a bogey at the first but birdied the next two holes and another birdie followed at the long par 4 8th. I pared the 9th to make the turn at two under and 4 under for the tournament. Needed a good back nine to challenge at the top of the leaderboard but I couldn't find a birdie as I pared the first 6 holes on the back nine. I eventually made birdie on the 16th but gave the shot straight back with a bad bogey on the 17th. I pared my final hole to shoot 2 under-par 69 and finish on 4 under for the event with 1 round to go. I struggled with distance control of my wedges today for some reason. Might have been due to the weather as it was very windy again today. In a good position, so a good score tomorrow and then I can enjoy three weeks off. David

9 May, Tessali-Metaponto Open di Puglia e Basilicata, 4th Round, 76 (+5)

Very disappointed after shooting 5 over-par 76 today. It was looking good early on but things went from bad to worse and I dropped back down the leaderboard and eventually finished tied for 29th. Bogeyed the first again for the second day running but got the shot straight back with a birdie at the par 3 second. Birdied the 4th to get to 1 under but when I reached the 7th things started to go wrong. I bogeyed the 7th and 8th holes and eventually made the turn at 1 over par. Still thought if I made a few birdies coming in I would be right up there but it didn't happen. Bogey's followed on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes before I stopped the rot with a birdie at the 14th but it was only a temporary improvement. I bogeyed the 16th before a final bogey at the last and I was home in 40 for a 76, not great! Have three weeks off now to sort my game out and get ready to challenge once again. David
