July 2004

1 July, Volvo Finnish Open, 1st Round, 71 (Even)
Shot even par 71 this morning. Played really pretty well today without doing anything special. Fluffed a couple of chips and struggled on greens again. Started well with a birdie on the par 5 second and then moved to 2 under with a good birdie at the 5th. Bogeyed the 8th to make the turn at one under. Played well on the back nine but bogeyed the 13th and then bogeyed the 506 yard par 4 fifteenth. Finished my round off well though with a solid birdie on the final hole to shoot even par 71. It was windy all through the round but it is dying down now. Greens aren't the best but they are the same for everyone. Forecast is not that good for tomorrow so we will have to wait and see. Off to get a bite to eat. David

2 July, Volvo Finnish Open, 2nd Round, 70 (-1)
70. Played solid again today but still having too many putts. I need to start making the key putts. Got off to another good start today with birdies on the 4th and 5th holes to get to two under but momentum was stopped when I bogeyed the following two holes to fall back to even par. Turned at even after a couple of pars on 8 and 9 then moved to one under with a great birdie 2 at the short par 3 12th. Finished with 6 consecutive par 4's to shoot 1 under-par 70. Only around six or seven shots back so a good round on Saturday will hopefully move me up the leaderboard and give me a chance to challenge on Sunday. Away to practice my putting. David.

3 July, Volvo Finnish Open
Back in hotel after play called for the day. Due to restart at nine tomorrow, although course completely flooded so that not looking too good either.

4 July, Volvo Finnish Open, 3rd Round, 70 (-1)
Shot one under-par 70 again today. Tournament has been reduced to 54 holes due to the weather so finished 2 under-par for the event. Played really solid but missed everything on the greens again. Had six really good chances to finish and surprisingly missed them all. Didn't start that great with a bogey at the opening hole but I birdied the 5th for the third straight round to get back to level. Made a bad bogey at the 8th but got the shot straight back with a birdie at the 9th to make the turn at level par. Birdied the par 5 11th to get to one under but couldn't make a thing over the closing holes and finished with 7 straight pars. Lying tied 26th at the moment. David

8 July, Open des Volcans - Challenge de France, 1st Round, 80 (+9)
Shot a very disappointing 80, plus nine today. The conditions were very hard with gale force winds blowing all day. I had played well through the first 11 holes to be level par but then had the worst seven holes I can think of. Didn't get off to a great start with a bogey at the first but a birdie at the 4th followed by another birdie on the par 5 6th got me to one under. Dropped a shot at the 8th but was more than happy to reach the turn at level par in the conditions. Parred the 10th and then that's when things started to go wrong. Three doubles and three bogeys in last seven holes and I ended up with a 9 over-par 80. Mentally the worst I have ever been. Short game was appalling along with my putting. I only hit one loose shot all day but the conditions were impossible. I was disgraceful. David

9 July, Open des Volcans - Challenge de France, 2nd Round, 72 (+1)
Eight shots better today but still not the score I needed to make the weekend. Shot 72 one over but I hit the ball terrible, probably the worst all year but finally putted solidly. Hit no fairways but only once in trouble. Started at the 10th today and made a good start with a birdie at the 11th. Dropped shots at 12 and 14 but made the turn at level par thanks to a birdie at the par 3 17th. A sloppy start to the back nine cost me the chance of making the cut. Bogeyed the 10th and 11th holes which are probably the best chances for birdies on the whole course. Birdied the 6th to get one shot back but finished with 3 pars to shoot 1 over and end up on 10 over-par for the tournament. The cut is looking like plus eight, so after all that garbage looks like I will only miss by two at most. Mentally I was still very poor today. David

14 July, Texbond Open, 1st Round, 73 (+1)
Shot 73, one over for the day. I struggled with pretty much everything all day especially off the tee. Holed out quite well but did not make anything. Started well with a birdie at the opening hole but dropped shots at the par three second and the 4th. Got one of those shots back with a great birdie 2 at the par three 9th to make the turn at even par. Dropped back to one over with a bogey at the long par 3 14th but got that shot back with a solid birdie on the par 5 16th. Yet again though and for the second time today I dropped a shot at the following hole. Parred the last to finish on 1 over for the day. Not disastrous since it was the worst I've hit the ball in a while. Off to the range to work on a few things. David

15 July, Texbond Open, 2nd Round, 70 (-2)

Struggled again. One under on the front nine with the short game not too sharp. Then played terrible on the back nine, but still managed to hack it round in one under. Not great but at least I made another cut. Speak to you tomorrow, David

19 July, Texbond Open, 3rd Round, 72 (Even), 4th Round 64 (-8)
Sorry for the delay in reports - the technology is letting me down again. Didn't play very well on Saturday, but then everything clicked on Sunday! Started with a bogey and felt like it was going to be one of those days, but birdied 2, 3 and 5 to turn at 2 under. Then I had a very fast finish with four birdies and an eagle in the last six holes for my lowest pro round. That lifted me up to tied 18th and made me a nice cheque. I am now back in the top 80 on the rankings, but I need a couple more big finishes before the year is out. Speak to you soon, David

22 July, JJB Sports North West Challenge, 1st Round 72 (+2)
Struggled with my driver today so I hit lots of three woods. I hit my irons solid but could not make a putt. Got off to a bad start with a bogey at 10, got it back at 12, only to bogey 15. One dumb mistake at the par-5 5th cost me a shot too and 2-over leaves me a long way back. 72 was the worst I could have shot too as I only had one single putt and the longest putt I holed was 3 feet. Will be spending time on the putting green this afternoon! David

23 July, JJB Sports North West Challenge, 2nd Round 67 (-3)
Finally a round without a bogey! It was windy today but I played solidly and only missed two greens and got up and down both times. I holed out well today so all the practice yesterday paid off. I birdied 6, made a nice putt at 10 for another and birdied the 11th too. That lifted me up to tied 43rd and inside the cut by a shot. Everyone's very tightly packed so another good score tomorrow would get me back in the tournament. David`

24 July, JJB Sports North West Challenge, 3rd Round 66 (-4)
No bogeys again today, but unfortunately I doubled the third. It was very windy and I played really solid and only missed two greens again. I birdied 2,4,6 and 9 going out and then 15 and 17. I putted pretty well but still missed some good chances. Having lunch then a bit of practise before relaxing the rest of the day. I am up to tied 14th and only 2 shots off second place so another round like today's and I should be in for a good finish. David

25 July, JJB Sports North West Challenge, 4th Round 72 (+2)
It was wind and pouring rain today and very hard work. Absolutely miserable weather. Made two birdies to finish tied 13th after being four over thru 14. I played solid apart from a couple of bad shots and a two three putts. It's my second top-20 in a row and my best finish of the year, so at least everything is moving in the right direction. Speak to you soon, David
