October 2003
21 October, Preparing For Tour School
It has been a frustrating month as I have not been able to get into any
tournaments, so I have just been practicing hard and getting ready for
the European Tour Qualifying School next week. I have been up to see my
coach, Ian Rae, who is based in Drumoig and we have been working on a
few things and I am swinging really well. As a Challenge Tour player I
am exempt into Stage 2 qualifying, where you play four rounds and the
top 20-30 make it through to Final Qualifying. At least this year should
be more relaxed than last year as I am guaranteed a full Challenge Tour
card in 2004, plus entry to the co-sanctioned European Tour events, as
I finished 62nd, and in the top 80, of the Challenge Tour Rankings this
year. Therefore I can only improve on that by getting my European Tour
Card at Final Qualifying, but it will still be hard! I am playing Stage
2 at TorreMirona GC near Barcelona and it starts on 30 October, so I'll
catch up with you from Spain. David
30 October, European Tour School, Stage 2, 1st Round, 75 (+3)
I was last in the last three off the first tee this morning and my position
at the end of the day has not improved much beyond that! The TorreMirona
course was playing very easy today and I did not take advantage. Every
aspect of my short game was poor - from chipping and pitching to putting.
My mind was not in gear either, which is not surprising given that I have
not played tournament for 7 weeks. I just need to get in the top 33 this
week, not win it, so a good round tomorrow is required...David
31 October, European Tour School, Stage 2, 2nd Round, 71 (-1)
The weather was terrible today. It blew a gale and then we had torrential
rain for the last two holes. Despite the conditions, I played pretty well
and made a good start from the 10th. I missed some decent chances early
on and only dropped one shot when I made a silly 3 putt for bogey. Only
two people shot better than 71 and it jumped me up the leaderboard to
tied 43rd, so if I can do the same tomorrow I should be in good shape
for Sunday. Off to do a little practice and then back to the hotel to
take it easy. David
