June 2003

3 June, Nykredit Danish Open
Just got a late entry into the Nykredit Danish Open on the European Challenge Tour this week. It means an early flight tomorrow though. Hopefully I will get to the tournament in time to have a practice round but it's looking very unlikely. Have been doing a lot of practice back home and it has been going well so have a good feeling about this week. Will let you know how it goes once I get to Denmark. David

5 June, Nykredit Danish Open 1st Round, 75(+3)
Played pretty well today but still making a few really soft mistakes. Started on the 10th and made the turn in 2 over. I then got it going when I eagled the first followed by a birdie on the par 4 third. But after all the good work to get in back to 1 under for the day I had a horrific finish. Some how I made bogeys on 4 out of the last 6 holes to finish on 3 over 75. The course is very hard and fast due to the windy conditions and the rough is brutal so you have to drive the ball well. The top 10 start at 1 under but after that it is very bunched up. Today was a good opportunity wasted. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit better. David

6 June, Nykredit Danish Open 2nd Round, 74(+2)
An up and down round today. Played pretty well although my driver and 3 wood shots were all poor. Again I'm making bad mental mistakes which cost me 6 shots today. Got of to a bad start with a bogey at the first but got one straight back at the next with a birdie. Got another birdie at the 5th before bogey's on 8 and 9 left me 1 over for the day. Things got worse when I hit a 3 wood Out of bounds by less than a centimetre. 2 6's and a 7 on the card is always going to make it tough to score. Birdied the 16th and had a chance at the last for another birdie but I hit a poor putt. Hit a lot of good irons and putts today without any reward. It's not looking good for the weekend but we will just have to wait and see. David

19 June, Clearstream International Luxembourg Open 1st Round, 68(-4)
Played pretty solid all day. After a slow start I got it going with a birdie on the 6th only to give the shot straight back at the next. But I was then able to get it going again in middle of my round when I birdied the following 3 holes around the turn before I bogied the 11th to fall back to 2 under for the day. I got a bit tentative after that where I just tried not to drop any more silly shots. Both bogies came the way of poor long iron shots followed by poor bunker shots when trying to get up and down to save my par. Good news was that I finished strongly with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes. Always good to finish on a birdie. I putted better today although the greens are all very slow. Drove the ball solid but just those couple of sloppy long irons and poor bunker shots cost me the two drop shots. Generally happy with the way things went. Off to get some lunch and then onto the practice area to sort a few things out. David

20 June, Clearstream International Luxembourg Open 2nd Round, 70(-2)
Was a bit sloppy today. A lot of little mental mistakes that i can't afford to do at this level. Finished up shooting 2 under today but it should have been better. It does mean though that I've made the cut and at least I get paid this week. Never really got settled the whole day despite a good start with a birdie at the first hole. Got three more birdies on the 9th to turn at one under and the 11th and 14th holes on the back nine. I had chances for a lot more that I did not convert any off them. These birdies were offset by bogeys at the 5th when I hit it in a hazard and the 12th when I 3 putted from no where. Didn't putt well all day and never holed a thing. Off for a bit of putting practice and then some dinner. David

21/22 June, Clearstream International Luxembourg Open 3rd/4th Round, 73(+1) 69(-3)
Sorry for not updating the site this weekend but we had a few technical difficulties. Anyway, on Saturday I shot a very disappointing 1 over par 73. The course was playing so easy today and was there for the taking. Got off to a poor start and never really recovered. I played good after the bad start but my putting again let me down and was an absolute disgrace. Just can't expect to compete if I putt like that. To sum the day up I missed from 2 feet on the last for birdie. That cheered me up no end! Bogeyed the second and third but got one back with a good birdie at the 6th. Got back to level par for the day with a birdie at the 15th but a bogey on seventeen and then the short missed putt at the last meant a shot 1 over. Not what I was looking for. I'm giving myself so many good chances and just not converting any off them. I'm a bit hacked off after working hard on my putting the last two days and getting nothing back. Well things started to click on Sunday with the putter at last before what I think was a terrible referee decision on my final hole cost me a 7 to only shoot 3 under 69. Had played very well all day. Putted solid but I'm still leaving a few shots out there. Again had a lot of good chances for birdies. I made a few more but what happened on the last had left a bad taste in the mouth. Absolutely gutted. Played so much better than I scored this week but we will take the positives out of it and move onto the next event. David

26 June, Galeria Kaufhof Pokal Challenge, Germany, 1st Round 73 (+1)
I was four under with 7 to go so I am not happy! My driving was the worst ever and I only hit two fairways, but got away with it to start with and putted really well but then it caught up with me. The rough is very thick and it putt a lot of pressure on my short game which eventually gave out towards the end. After starting with a bogey at the 10th I birdied 14, 15, 17, 18 and 1 to get to 5-under, then bogeyed 3, 4, 8 and doubled 6 to fall back to 1 over. I need a mid 60s round to make the cut tomorrow - off to the range now for a long time. David

27 June, Galeria Kaufhof Pokal Challenge, Germany, 2nd Round 71 (-1)
Two 6s on the front nine at 3 and 9 put paid to any chance I had of making the cut, although I was still level par for the first 9 thanks to five 3s in a row from the 4th. On the way home I birdied 12, 15 and 16, only to double 17 to drop back to 1-under and tied 98th. My driver was poor again today and I hit lots of 2-irons instead. I had a lot of good chances and hit a lot of good putts but nothing really happened. Off back home tonight and will catch up with you at my next event. David
