May 2002

2 May, Credit Suisse Private Banking Open, 1st Round 78 (+7)
What a round - torrential rain all day and I got soaked through. I only hit one fairway all day, which is not a good idea with wet rough. Got off to a bad start with a bogey at the first and it was bogeys and pars all the way apart from a lone birdie at the par-5 sixth. I putted well but made nothing, plus I missed a shocker. My caddy Scott said he had never been so wet on a golf course in his life! Still tomorrow's another day (hopefully drier) and with a third of the field still to go out I need a very low round tomorrow. Off to dry out, David

3 May, Credit Suisse Private Banking Open, Day 2
Well, it rained all day again and we hung around the course until 2pm, when they called play off. Half the field are still to complete their first round and if it stops raining then I may get my second round underway late tomorrow. At least it has given our kit another day to dry out! David

4 May, Credit Suisse Private Banking Open, Day 3
More rain today and the event has now been cancelled because Lake Maggiore next to the course has overflowed, leaving several holes under water. There has also been lightning and thunderstorms causing several long suspensions of play and half the field have still not completed their first rounds. The Tour are going to give us some money for expenses and at least I got to play rather than hang around for 3 days not hitting a ball in anger. Hopefully next week back in Italy will be a bit drier! David

23 May, Izki Challenge de Espana, 1st Round, 74 (+1)
Well, I'm back in action this week in Spain and I've just finished my first round. Starting with four 5's in the first 4 holes didn't make for an ideal start (to a par of 4,4,5,4) and the front nine can only really be described as a bit scrappy. Things picked up though and I played solid on the back nine with birdies at the 11th, 16th and 18th. All in all it added up to a 1-over-par 74. Not a great start, but not disastrous. Conditions weren't that easy - although the weather is quite nice it is still quite windy out there. Off for some practice and a bite to eat. Speak to you tomorrow. Cheers, David.

25 May, Izki Challenge de Espana, 2nd Round, 74 (+1)

I actually played quite well most of yesterday but unfortunately my chipping and pitching really let me down. Every green I missed ended up with a bogey. You just can't afford to do that with the level of competition out here, so in the end I missed the cut by 3 shots. I'm having a few problems getting home at the moment, but hopefully I should have at least a day at home before heading off to Austria next week. Not really a week to remember, but I'm still feeling pretty good about my game and I'm looking forward to improving next week! Catch up with you later. Cheers, David

30 May, Austrian Golf Open, 74 (+2)
Usual miserable start of +3 after five holes, but then I managed to play a lot better on the back nine. I made far too many careless bogeys and my pitching was (unusually) poor. However on the positive side my putting was much better and just as well as the greens are lightning fast. -6 was leading when I last looked so I will need a mid 60s score tomorrow to get back into the tournament. Off to the practice ground for the afternoon to straighten things out! David

31 May, Austrian Golf Open, 76 (+4)
Shot a 76 - somehow. I played well to start with as I went off the tenth tee and made a couple of birdies to get back to level. Then it went horribly wrong with 5 dropped shots in as many holes. Needless to say I haven't made the cut which came at -3 so it is time to pack up and head home. I am looking forward to a rest this weekend as I am tired and a bit hacked off. However I just need to keep playing as I know a good tournament is around the corner! Cheers for now, David
