June 2002
6 June, Nykredit Danish Open, 1st Round, 76 (+4)
Today it was blowing a gale and I have the worst hayfever ever! I played
well and only missed one green in the first ten holes, but was five over
after a treble at 7 and some poor putting. Despite a birdie at 12, I dropped
a couple at 13 and 14 to go to 6 over. However I got managed to give myself
a chance of making the cut with two birdies in the last four holes for
76. I am tied 53rd, with the top 50 making the cut, so if I can eliminate
the mistakes, I should shoot a good enough score to get into the weekend
for a change. Cheers, David
7 June, Nykredit Danish Open, 2nd Round, 77 (+5)
Played OK today, but nothing went my way, especially at the last when
I made a terrible bogey. By then it was all over, as I had started well
with a birdie at the first and eigth, but three bogeys, including a 6
at the ninth started a run of poor figures. In the end 77 will miss the
cut by a couple so I am just trying to find a way home today. I'm just
not scoring at the moment, so I will have to work on that before the next
event in Germany. Bye for now, David
13 June, Galeria Kaufhof Pokal Challenge, Germany, 1st Round, 76 (+4)
I am in Germany at the Rittergut Birkhof course this week, although there
is another Challenge Tour event this week in France, with a bigger purse.
When I got here on Tuesday afternoon I found out I had got into the French
event, but decided to stay here as I have done too much traveling lately.
Yesterday's pro-am nearly changed my mind as it took 5hrs 45mins to get
round! Today I got off to a steady start with 6 pars, but then dropped
shots at the 7th and the par-5 9th. However I birdied the next par five
but then gave it back at 13 and doubled the par-3 17th for good measure.
Usual stuff I am afraid - good tee to green, but the odd expensive mistake
and some poor putting. I'll probably need level par or better tomorrow
to make the weekend, so I am off to the range to put some work in. Cheers,
David
14 June, Galeria Kaufhof Pokal Challenge, Germany, 2nd Round, 70 (-2)
Hit a lot of good shots today, but three bad tee shots led to three bogeys
and in the end that was the difference as I missed the cut by three. Missing
four six footers on the front nine didn't help either! Starting from the
tenth, I birdied 10 and 14, but the got halted in my tracks at the par-5
15th where a bad drive led to a bogey. I got it back with a birdie at
2, but then two dropped shots in the next three holes meant my finishing
birdie two was immaterial. I am disappointed yet again with my results,
but I played better this week. At least there was some good news today
as I found out I have got into the Great North Open at Slaley Hall on
the European Tour next week. Hopefully I can have a more successful week
closer to home! David
20 June, Great North Open, England, 1st Round 83 (+11)
What can I say?! Just had a nightmare from the off with dropped shots
all over the place. The only bright point was a birdie 3 at the 15th,
my 6th. I am currently propping up the leaderboard, but I am in good company
as two others shot 83 as well. At least there is only one way to go from
here and I haven't become a bad player overnight. I am off at 7.40am tomorrow
so I'll miss the England v Brazil game, which might be a beneficial depending
on your point of view. I'll go for it tomorrow and see if I can put a
low number in. Cheers, David
21 June, Great North Open, England, 2nd Round 70 (-2)
What a difference a day makes! A much better day at the office today.
I birdied the first, which get me off on the right foot, but dropped shots
at 2 and 6 to go one over. I hit my approach to two feet at first and
as I stood over it there was a massive cheer from the clubhouse as Michael
Owen scored for England over Brazil! Still I made that one, but missed
a lot of putts in the first six holes. I managed to hold things together
and made two 4s at the back to back par-5s at 11 and 12 to get into the
red figures again, and then a birdie 2 at 17 got me to 2 under par for
the round. I am pleased that I managed to put up a decent showing for
one round, despite missing the cut by miles. It's all good experience
though and I am now going to have a week off before teeing it up in Finland
on 11 July. I am pretty knackered, so it will be good to get home for
a rest. Thanks for your support, David
