August 2001
31 August, Formby Hall Challenge, 2nd Round, 74 (+2)
After the excitement of yesterday, it was back to earth with a bump
on a very blustery day! At the par-4 fourth my ball was on the green,
then as I started walking to the hole it rolled back off the green into
the water and I did well to pitch and putt for a bogey. I then birdied
six with a 2 and then the par-5 seventh to improve my overnight position
by one. Then the rollercoaster ride started with a bogey 5 at 11, a double
bogey 6 at 12, par 3 at 13, birdie four at 14 and double bogey 7 and 15!!
At the 15th I hit my only poor tee shot of the day into a ditch, dropped
out. missed the green, chipped on and three-putted - easy 7!!. In the
end I was happy to finish par, par, birdie for two-over when it could
have been much worse. This currently leaves me tied 26th and in the great
position of having made my first professional cut on tour!! It will be
great to get paid after all these year's of playing as an amateur. Hopefully
I can avoid today's disasters and climb the leaderboard tomorrow. Cheers,
David.
30 August, Formby Hall Challenge, 1st Round, 69 (-3)
Got off to a great start in my first pro event. I wasn't as nervous
as I thought I would be on the tenth tee (my first) and opened with a
steady par, birdied the 11th and the par-5, 15th to make the turn in two
under. I then dropped a shot at the 3rd before making birdie at 5 and
7 to finish at 3-under. This currently leaves me tied for 3rd, but a lot
of people have still to come in. Overall I played very steady, despite
not driving as well as I would have liked, but at least I kept the big
numbers off the card, which is an achievement on this Formby Hall course
with ditches running everywhere. I spent a bit of time practising afterwards
and I am now back off to the B&B to prepare for my 1pm tee time tomorrow.
You can check my scores at www.europeantour.com,
although they only seem to do 9 holes at a time on the Challenge Tour!
Speak to you tomorrow, hopefully with some good news. David
23 August, Pro Golf Starts
In the last couple of days I have just found out that I have got into
a couple of Challenge Tour events. The first is the Formby Challenge on
30 August followed by the Muermans Real Estate Challenge in Holland the
week after. Unless I can magic a couple of wins out of the bag, I will
use them as good experience leading up to the Tour Schools and hopefully
an early chance to get the first cheque in the bank! After that I plan
to go to Australia for their Tour School, before returning to Europe for
the European Tour School in November. I have also managed to get some
kit sponsorship from Titleist and my new bag should be arriving soon.
Those nice fellows at Golfalot.com
will be updating my site with my results, so please check back to
hear about my first event. I'm now off to Elie for some practice and hopefully
some nice weather too. You can see the results of all this practice by
downloading an mpeg of my swing from the menu on the right. I can assure
you the shot went right down the middle!! Speak to you soon, David.
6 August, Turning Pro!!
Today is the day I officially turn pro - a day I have been working
towards for the last few years. I am hoping to try and play in a few events
before the European Tour School qualifying rounds in September to get
some tournament experience and some money in the bank. On that front,
I have some sponsors lined up and I will be letting you know who they
are later in the year. Thanks for all your support through my amateur
days and I will keep you in touch as I make my way through the pro ranks.
David
